Fifth Degrees Stories to Write Up

  2005

  • October 2005: At Singing Sundae, one of the ninth graders in Fanchon's troop says to Theresa, "Did you used to teach at Lamplighter?" After Theresa's "yes" reply, she says, "My mom did, too. I'm Betty Brown's daughter, Kelsey." It's been 14 years since Betty and Theresa taught together. Betty was pregnant with Kelsey, then was diagnosed with breast cancer. She chose to postpone her treatment for the sake of the baby. The miracle is, Betty survived the breast cancer and now Theresa gets to see that Kelsey is a beautiful, bright, dynamic young woman. What a thrill! Betty knew I had been involved in Girl Scouts and said to Kelsey before she left, "See if you can find someone named Theresa Overall." So is this a staged degree? Did Theresa really already know Kelsey so this is first degree? Who cares! Kelsey is definitely a miracle baby and that her mom is alive and a 15 year survivor is a miracle, too. So this goes in the combination category AND in the miraculous category making it 5th degree.
  • September 2005: Bill Elieson and the Doctors Nora and David Bell -- the orange piece of paper from  Summer 2002

    Before 1999 and/or year unknown
    •  Granddaddy's priest and Father Ballant
    •  former 4100 student at CompUSA that Theresa happened to get into his checkout line (Theresa didn't recognize him 'cuz he didn't come to class too often). He recognized her and was so glad to see her because he'd been wanting for a long time to find her and to tell her how much he appreciated her generosity/flexibility in allowing him do extra work to earn a higher grade (got into paramedic school because gpa was okay)
    •  can't remember whole story; one year in June Theresa made airline reservations to go to ABQ for Christmas and got into a long conversation with the reservationist about ABQ and other stuff. Later that year either Theresa called to make other reservations or Karen called to make reservations and we got the same reservationist who said "Didn't I make reservations for you (your sister) earlier this year?"
    •  At UNT, everyone is assigned an "euid" consisting of your initials and 4 digits. As a student, Theresa was assigned tlo0004. As an employee, Theresa was assigned tlo0006. Theresa often wondered who the other tlo's were at UNT. One day Theresa had to go to the computing center to get a problem cleared up with my account. While waiting for her guy to come back with the needed information, a woman walks in and asks a question to a second clerk. "Whaat's your euid?" he asks. "tlo0003". Theresa went over and introduced herself. The woman introduced herself back but was obviously not nearly as excited about the coincidence as Theresa was.
    •  The famous Mossinghoff story (Dr. Mari witnessed this one first hand)--First degree: Peggy Mossinghoff --Second degree: Mike Mossinghoff [in the same day!]
    •  Theresa is going to the new cookie manager's house to drop off her troop's cookie money. She's driving down the street thinking, "I know this neighborhood. I used to babysit the Mercers on this street." She pulls up to the house and it IS the Mercer's house. Janny's family had bought it from the Mercers. What a way to meet Janny.
    •  Karen, the Christian radio billboard, and the NPR interview.
    •  Stacey Newton . . . both times ;-) 1. At the Arboretum and then at Lamplighter; 2. on the web during a search and then via email
